N level Sci Chem - Elements, Compounds and Mixtures, Atomic Structure

Good morning good morning,

Two topics coming right up in this post!

A summary of popular questions based on the topics:

Elements, Compounds and Mixtures

  1. Distinguishing the diagrams for elements, compounds, mixtures
    Note:
Elements can exist as atoms / molecules [Refer to question 1, diagram R and S respectively]
  2. Common examples of mixtures - air, crude oil / petroleum / seawater / alloys e.g. brass, steel
  3. Good to know: the definition of elements, compounds, mixtures as it will guide you towards identifying them.

Atomic Structure

  1. The three subatomic particles and their relative charges and approximate relative massess.
  2. 'Location' of the three  subatomic particles.
  3. Define isotopes and describe similarity / differences in given isotopes
    (See Section B, question 1)
  4. Writing electronic configuration, drawing electronic structure of atoms and ions
  5. Describe the change when an atom becomes an ion.
  6. Understand how to write nuclide notation (refer to diagram below)
